Matyas Pavlik – The Multicultural Journey in Glass

Matyas Pavlik is known for his striking blend of geometric and organic forms. Born in 1984 into a family of renowned glass artists, with influence from his mother, Vladimíra Klumpar, Pavlík’s artistic vision was shaped by a multicultural upbringing in the United States, Mexico, and Portugal, which contributed to his deep understanding of color and form. While studying graphic design at the University of San Francisco, Pavlik spent a semester at the Academy of Art and Design in Prague. It was during this period that he discovered his passion for working with clay and plaster, becoming captivated by the limitless possibilities of kiln casting.

To master the art of glass casting, he returned to the Czech Republic and began working alongside his mother, honing his skills in their shared studio near the “Crystal Valley” in Železný Brod. This experience allowed him to fully embrace Czech glassmaking heritage, incorporating modern design elements alongside traditional techniques like glass cutting into his conceptual creations.

Pavlik’s sculptures, exhibited internationally, are celebrated for their technical precision and artistic balance, merging natural forms with structured, angular designs. As part of a new generation of glass artists, he continues to push the boundaries of this traditional craft while preserving its rich heritage.

Artist Statement: “I am fascinated with the way nature, however organic it may seem, if you look closely, microsccopically, you will find that there are always undeniable elements of geometry to be found. There is something beautiful in the tension between them, a sense of suspense. This dance is what I seek to portray in my work.”
