Exploring the Czech Legacy in Contemporary Glass Sculpture

Czech glass artists have played a decisive role in shaping the global movement of contemporary glass art. Bohemia’s glassmaking heritage dates back to the Middle Ages, celebrated for its material purity and artisanal quality. But it was in the 1950s that Czech artists transformed the medium, pioneering a new era in glass sculpture and redefining its potential as a form of fine art. Leading this innovation were internationally renowned figures such as Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, whose sculptural collaborations became icons of modern glass art. Alongside them, artists like René Roubíček, Vladimír Kopecký, and Václav Cigler expanded the language of glass with experimental forms and conceptual depth. Together, these visionaries laid the foundation for what is now known as the Czech studio glass movement.

This artistic excellence is deeply rooted in a unique educational system—combining hands-on training at specialized Czech glass schools with advanced studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. The result is a generation of artists whose work merges exceptional technique with artistic innovation, placing Czech glass at the forefront of the international art scene.
