Peter Bremers Solo Show

Peter Bremers – Solo Exhibition

Exhibition date: August 2018 – November 2018

The Dutch artist Peter Bremers was born in Maastricht in 1957 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1976 to 1980, majoring in classical sculpture. Between 1986 and 1988 he attended the Jan van Eyck Academy, a post-graduate institute for fine arts, where he participated in a workshop by the Dutch designer A.D. Copier (1901-1991), during which he had his initial contact with glass. As a sculptor he had already worked with a wide range of materials, but was fascinated by the design possibilities of this material. In 1989 he attended a course by the world-famous Venetian glass artist Lino Tagliapietra (born 1934) at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Inspired by the luminous, melted material, he made glass his preferred medium.

Peters Bremers is a master of light, depicting the sublimity that occurs in nature in his sculptures. Bremers says: “We see the natural world as something separate from ourselves, using its gifts without restriction for economic gain and thereby turning it from an ancient friend into a foe. We show little gratitude and seem to forget that we ourselves are only a part of nature.”

His drive to express his gratitude to nature provides the underpinnings for his work. In his objects, he strives to convey the “incredible power and grandeur of nature” and his sense of wonder by pursuing a constantly changing, lifelong journey through the world, through art and within himself. He does not want to imitate or follow, but express his sensitivity to miracles as a person and artist. His fascination for the cultural and natural diversity of our planet is one of his greatest inspirations.
