This contribution was published in the September 1998 edition of ‘Kultur in Hamburg’ in the Hamburg Guide to Culture. If a gallery owner, in the course of his work, puts ‘the financial side’ at the top of his list, then he can count on becoming not so much a liaison person between the artist and the interested buyer rather than a salesman. In order to sell, he then has to yield to the taste of the purchaser, and this can happen very easily in the case of glass.
As a purveyor of art I look at things from the other end of the spectrum. You have to invest all your power in that which you really believe in - and without any compro- mises. That is also what I expect of the

artist. We both of us bear the risk in equal proportions. There must be understanding before the desire to live with an object can develop. In that way it is not a struggle, but rather a process of enrichment for both parties.
Naturally I also exhibit young glass artists. But not just because they are young, but because I am able to estimate whether they will be able to pursue their own direction in the future and be able to lend new impulses to glass art.
As a corollary I am also member of an association which set itself the task, immediately after reunification, of providing financial help for the Academy of Applied Art in Prague in which young glass artists can enjoy a unique form of education. By means of this support this school has been
