10 Years Glasgalerie Hittfeld

(Questions put to the gallery owner
Eliska Stölting)

Interviewer: Frau Stölting, you have been running the Glasgalerie Hittfeld for 10 years now. Today your gallery is counted, both nationally and internationally, amongst the most renowned institutes in this sector. Everything started with your studies. What exactly did you study and what professional experience did you have directly after your studies?

Eliska Stölting: Let me first and foremost make it clear that ‘gallery owner ’ is not a profession which it is possible to learn. For that reason my education is not that of a gallery owner but quite the opposite:
However my activities as a gallery owner did arise as a result of my education.

In 1958 I began to study at the Professional Glass School in Zelezny Brod in Northern Bohemia - that is at exactly the time when the studio glass movement was beginning: it was also the time when Professor Stanislav Libensky - a great artist and an excellent teacher - was director of the school.

This four-year course of studies, ending in the „A" Level Certificate (German/ Czech ‘Abitur’) teaches not only the skills of the handicraft, but it also conveys simultaneously a sense of feeling for glass as a material. In this way we are able, for instance, later to execute our own designs in glass.
